Understanding the question

Here’s an example of a question you might receive in a university context.

Discuss the issue of patient autonomy in relation to at least one case study.

Let’s break it down intro three elements to understand the assignment.

Discuss

The task here is to "discuss". This means you need to look at the topic from different angles, and then come to your own conclusion. You could compare theory and practice, for example.

Look out for task words, like outline, review, consider, evaluate, and explain, and think hard about what they are asking you to do.

The issue of patient autonomy

The subject is "the issue of patient autonomy". Make sure you know what that means, not only "patient autonomy" but also any "issue" attached to the subject.

In relation to at least one case study

The limits to the question are "in relation to at least one case study". How many is "at least one"? One? Or might two be a safer bet? Ask if it's not clear.

The point is that the question is not asking you to talk about patient autonomy in general, but to tie your arguments into the details of one or more case studies.
